A Brief Discussion on Dual-Channel Cooling for Data Centers

2024-10-22

With the advancement of theglobal information wave, the digital transformation of enterprises has become an irreversible trend. As the core carrier of cloud services, data centers play a crucial role in this process. However, as the scale of data centers continues to expand, their energy consumption issue has become increasingly prominent, becoming a bottleneck constraining their sustainable development. This article aims to explore effective ways to reduce energy consumption in data centers, particularly addressing the current situation of air-conditioning systems, which are major energy consumers, and introducing an innovative dual-channel cooling technology.

1. Current Status of Data Center Energy Consumption
Data centers, as an important component of information technology infrastructure, cannot ignore their energy consumption issue. Statistics show that the electricity consumption of data centers accounts for 8% of the total electricity consumption of public institutions, and in some central government agencies, the proportion of electricity consumption by data centers is as high as 30%. These data not only reveal the huge scale of data center energy consumption but also reflect the severe situation regarding their energy consumption. Additionally, since data centers contribute relatively little to local tax revenue and electricity consumption accounts for a low proportion of their operating costs, some data centers lack motivation to save energy, further exacerbating the energy consumption issue.

2. Current Status of Cooling Technologies
Faced with the increasingly severe energy consumption challenge in data centers, the innovation of cooling technologies is particularly important. Currently, the mainstream cooling technologies on the market mainly include liquid cooling and air cooling. Liquid cooling technology has received widespread attention due to its efficient cooling performance, but its high construction costs limit its widespread application. In contrast, air cooling technology has lower construction costs but higher energy consumption, making it difficult to meet the growing cooling demand of data centers. Therefore, finding a cooling technology that can reduce energy consumption while controlling costs has become an urgent problem for the industry.

3. Dual-Channel Cooling Technology
In this context, dual-channel cooling technology emerges. This technology adopts a composite cooling method of "heat pipe water cooling + air-conditioning/natural air cooling," dividing the cooling system into two channels: liquid cooling and air cooling, to achieve precise cooling for components with different heat flux densities. The liquid cooling channel utilizes heat pipe water cooling technology to quickly transfer the heat generated inside the server to an external cooling system, achieving efficient cooling. The air cooling channel uses air-conditioning or natural air cooling methods to regulate the overall environment of the data center. Additionally, dual-channel cooling technology also achieves direct power supply to servers, reducing conversion losses and further improving energy utilization efficiency.

4. Technical Advantages and Market Prospects
Dual-channel cooling technology not only has comparable construction costs to traditional air-cooled data centers but also demonstrates significant advantages in terms of cooling efficiency, power usage effectiveness (PUE), and single-rack capacity. According to tests, the PUE of this technology can be below 1.2, the single-rack capacity can reach 30kW, and the CPU core temperature can be controlled below 54°C. Furthermore, with continuous technological iterations and upgrades, the second-generation dual-channel cooling technology can also utilize natural cooling water for cooling, further reducing the PUE to below 1.1. The emergence of this technology not only provides an effective solution for energy saving and consumption reduction in data centers but also injects new vitality into the sustainable development of the data center market.

From a market perspective, as the scale of data centers continues to expand and energy consumption issues become increasingly prominent, liquid cooling technology will gradually become a mainstream trend. Dual-channel cooling technology, as an innovative application of liquid cooling technology, will occupy an important position in the market for newly built or retrofitted data centers, leveraging its advantages of significant energy savings, high resource utilization, low investment costs, and safety and reliability.

5. Conclusion
In summary, energy saving and consumption reduction in data centers have become the focus of attention in the industry. Dual-channel cooling technology, as an innovative cooling solution, can not only effectively reduce data center energy consumption and improve energy utilization efficiency but also provide strong support for the sustainable development of data centers. In the future, with the continuous maturing of technology and the expansion of the market, dual-channel cooling technology is expected to play a more important role in the field of data centers, contributing to the vigorous development of the digital economy.
